The Story Of

Lola

In March 2022, we lost our gorgeous Lola very suddenly. It happened just before my new studio was finished and I wanted to make a memorial for her. So I did a drawing of her and made a frame depicting all her favourite things. At the top of the frame I modelled her and Millie sitting together. Now she sits in the studio with us, overlooking the garden and watching over Millie, who sleeps on the studio chair.

Using Anthracite Pastelmat board I outlined the drawing of Lola and started to fill in the details.

When the drawing of Lola was finished, I made a paper template to size and using self hardening modelling clay I rolled out and cut the frame shape to the template. I built up a rim around the outside of the frame, and modelled the items that would be stuck to the dried out frame.

After drying I stuck the individual modelled items to the frame with a glue gun.

When the items were stuck onto the frame, I cut a piece of ply to the shape of the frame using the paper template. This was stuck to the back of the frame to give it rigidity, spacers left a gap where the image of Lola could be slid in. I sprayed the whole thing matt anthracite, and fixed a picture hanging hook to the back of the frame.

Before finally placing the image of Lola I applied gold metal leaf to the front of the frame. Where it naturally came away the anthracite came through to the surface, an effect I really liked.
